St. John the Divine's Fundraising Lunch
If you're like us, you've probably driven past the 150 year old St. John the Divine church at 1611 Quadra St. hundreds of times without much of a thought as to what the building means to the community. However, during a luncheon hosted this past month by local developer Mike Miller, we learned that for many of Victoria's most needy citizens, this church is a refuge of hope. The building is a long-time partner for the Cool Aid society, providing emergency space for the homeless. It's also an emergency food bank, a place where people in need can get help with no questions asked and no hoops to jump through.
The 150-year-old church – one of the city’s most valuable and historically significant buildings – is in dire need of a new roof, and it's not cheap. The project will cost approximately $750,000 and although the local congregation has raised $475,000 of that cost, they need help from the community to raise the rest, and it's a worthy investment. The building is more than just a weekly meeting place for the local congregation. It's a seven day-a-week refuge and community resource.
